In 1784 Pero accompanied the Pinney family when they moved from the Caribbean island of Nevis to Bristol. The bridge was designed by the Irish artist, Eilis O’Connell.Ms Richardson added: “Pero’s Bridge in Bristol was commissioned and opened in 1999, and it commemorates the enslaved African Pero Jones. As part of our ‘Immortalised’ season we will be asking artists to respond to a need for different kinds of memorial, with new designs and concepts for future memorials to show in our Autumn exhibition.”Historic England’s survey also asked in which way, if any, would people like to be commemorated after they die. Nearly 40 per cent said a tree planted in their memory, 16% said a bench placed somewhere significant to them, 11% chose a plaque placed in their memory and 33% said they did not want to be commemorated. Photographs and stories about the submitted memorials will be gathered together for an exhibition later this year, exploring the way the public remembers those who have gone before them. Campaigns such as Rhodes Must Fall have allowed for more diverse memorials in Britain, it has been suggested by Historic England. The heritage group claimed that “history wars” over the place of memorials to controversial figures such as the slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol and colonialist Cecil Rhodes, the mining magnate, have led to Britain having a greater diversity of statues.Celia Richardson, director of communications and marketing at Historic England said such campaigns have “highlighted an important national debate about who is commemorated” in our public places, and how they are commemorated. She added: “There are conversations going on locally across the country, and a wave of new memorials is upon us – some of which are consciously aimed at bringing greater diversity to statues and other forms of memorial. “These include tributes to a number of women, as the nation commemorates the centenary of women’s suffrage. But many of the efforts to broaden the diversity of our memorials date back to well before the Rhodes Must Fall Oxford campaign caught national attention.”Historic England is inviting the public to nominate the memorials that mean the most to them, from those erected in memory of national heroes to those for far lesser known figures. It comes as research commissioned by Historic England found that one in seven women (14 per cent) and one in ten (10 per cent) of men have erected a memorial of their own to someone that mattered to them. GCCI President, Deodat IndarThe Georgetown Chamber of Commerce’s (GCCI) fight for local content legislation to be enacted for the oil and gas sector has been met with further delay as Government is not too keen on having this implemented anytime soon.In a move to safeguard the rights of Guyanese businesses, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) had submitted a model local content legislation to the Government of Guyana for consideration. But according to President of the GCCI Deodat Indaar, having met with several top government officials to discuss this, the chamber is convinced that this will be delayed.“We did not get word on Government’s response to the legislation so right now we are unsure of where Government is going in terms of inactive local office legislation” Indar revealed.Indar has expressed GCCI’s disappointment that there is no legislative framework since 2015 when the first oil discovery was made in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana. Speaking with the online publication via telephone on Tuesday Indaar said Government has proposed finalising the Local Content Policy first before consideration is given to tabling legislation. The second review of the local content policy is expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year. The model legislation defines Guyanese companies as companies that are registered in Guyana where 51 per cent of the share capital are owned by citizens of Guyana. In addition to that it stipulates that the board meetings of the said companies are held in Guyana; the head office of the company is located in Guyana and; 70 per cent of the workforce of the company follows suit with the definition of a citizen of Guyana.Another section of the bill stipulates that an operator or contractor must ensure that first consideration is given to Guyanese companies in the provision of goods and or services directly related to the petroleum industry. The GCCI is the only private sector body that has been pushing to have Guyanese businesses to cash in on the opportunities from this new and emerging sector. The Chamber has stated that local businesses can provide a whole host of services that include: logistics, catering, and freight forwarding, among. Innovative industrial/mining component design and manufacturing company Keech Australia has introduced a new system for product development that is set to slash the time taken from product conception to installation, potentially saving its customers millions of dollars in lost productivity revenue. Keech specialises in making steel castings and wear resistant products.Keech’s new state of the art 3D printing capability enables the product development team to make 3D models of custom components, using feedback collected directly from customers by Keech’s team of field engineers.“The goal is to precisely meet the customer’s requirements first time, every time,” said Dr Bala Hebbar, General Manager – Innovation and Quality at Keech. The use of 3D printing allows Keech to more quickly test new approaches to challenges like improving the method of attaching a component or decreasing of component weight. “What would take us 180 days to develop in the past can now be done in 90 days, thanks to our new streamlined system, so we’ve essentially cut the development time in half,” Hebbar said.“Previously, we would have had to make a 300 kg steel casting of a component and we still wouldn’t know how well it would fit in with the other components in a machine until it was installed on-site. Now, with our 3D printing capability, we can get a much better feel for a product’s compatibility using a scaled-down version. We are able to tell right away if it will work without having to go through the huge expense and time consuming process of making a full size casting.”The new development process was created partly in response to demand from the mining industry, where componentry can play a major role in production efficiency.“During the mining boom period, the primary concern for mine operators was getting the components they needed as quickly as possible. With ore prices falling, companies are now more focused on efficiency gains, increasing productivity and reducing downtime. Everyone is looking for a smart idea that will keep their machines running longer,” he said. The new streamlined process of information gathering and 3D printing has not come at the expense of rigorous testing – although it’s faster, the process is now more detailed than ever.“Where once we had five or six different steps in our development process, we now have 15 steps. The goal is to produce the right product first time, so we conduct even more validation and prototype testing,” Hebbar said.“We are consistently using innovative, forward-thinking methods to improve process, product and operational efficiency, not only to provide the best possible service to our customers, but also to remain ahead of our global competitors.”The knowledge the Keech development team gains through the use of the 3D printing further expedites the process of developing new components.“We can see what has worked in the past so we can compare and benchmark against what we are currently doing,” he said. “This design inventory helps with the flow of imagination within our engineering team, enabling them to develop better and better products.” read more

The first performance benchmarks are coming in for Apple’s latest 11 and 13-inch MacBook Airs, and the results are impressive to say the least.Laptopmag ran a number of tests checking boot time, battery life, data transfer, and temperatures, but its the Geekbench results that demonstrate what updating to the latest components can really do to the performance of a machine.Geekbench is a set of tests aimed specifically at showing the performance of a processor and associated memory. Once the test is run a machine is awarded a Geekbench score. These tests were run on the 2010 model of the MacBook Air, and now have been re-run on the new 2011 model.Last year Primate Labs, the company behind Geekbench, posted the results of the MacBook Air 2010 model. The 13-inch model achieved a score of 3,003 while the 11-inch came in at 2,280. So how did the new model’s compare? The new 13-inch Air managed to push that score up to 5,860. While that’s an huge gain, it pales in comparison to the improvement the 11-inch model has seen. That 2010 score of 2,280 has been pushed up to 5,040.While just testing the CPU and memory raw performance isn’t giving us the whole picture, it certainly bodes very well for the user experience, especially when combined with an SSD removing the data transfer bottleneck standard hard drives bring. What this does point to is the fact that anyone picking up a MacBook Air for the first time is most likely going to be surprised by the speed of these tiny laptops. Just as significantly, anyone upgrading from last year’s Air will certainly notice the speed bump therefore reinforcing their decision to spend that $999+ purchasing one.As further proof how much the performance of the Airs has improved, check out Primate Labs’ Mac Benchmarks roundup. The 11-inch score takes it above the 15-inch MacBook Pro (Core i5 2.4GHz from early 2010). The 13-inch now sits above the 17-inch MacBook Pro (Core i7 2.8GHz from early 2010).Coupled with a 5-hour battery life it certainly looks as though Apple is setting a new benchmark for what’s possible in a tiny performance laptop.via Laptopmag and Electricpig read more

If you’re an avid player of online games, the banhammer has probably pounded you like a nail at some point throughout your illustrious loot-grinding, min-maxing career. Whether it was deserved or not, it’s difficult to reverse a ban. Developer of zombie MMO H1Z1, Daybreak Game Company, is giving players a second chance, but there’s a catch: cheaters have to publicly apologize on YouTube for their misdeeds, shaming themselves for all to see. After a wave of bans that hammered around 25,000 accounts, Daybreak Game Company president John Smedley tweeted that he received many apologies from players who admitted the error of their ways, but they were going about it all wrong.Dear Cheaters who got banned. Many of you are emailing me, apologizing and admitting it. Thank you. However.. You’re doing it wrong— John Smedley (@j_smedley) May 20, 2015If you want us to even consider your apology a public YouTube apology is necessary. No personal information please. Email me the link— John Smedley (@j_smedley) May 20, 2015It’s not good enough to apologize; no, you have to do it in front of the world. Admit to everyone that you’re a cheater, apologize for your villainy, and live the rest of your zombie MMO days in shame. Smedley says the apologies should be made to the players for ruining their fun — not to the developers for breaking the rules — and the videos should be set to public for anyone to view.So far, out of the 25,000 accounts banned, Smedley has cited five players as having made sufficient apologies and being rewarded with a reinstated account, one of which you can check out above. It sounds more like a drug user coming clean at a rehabilitation center. The developer won’t go through an onslaught of videos for the rest of the game’s life cycle — Smedley stated that the offer only extended to a certain few who fit within a frame of time, which has since closed. The point of the offer wasn’t to show that developers can be merciful — if anything, that would just encourage cheaters to cheat more because an apology could unban their account — but to raise awareness of cheating in online games. While that’s not exactly the world’s top priority, ruining people’s leisure time after a hard day of work isn’t exactly victimless either. read more
EU member state websites laden with third-party cookies by Martin Brinkmann on March 19, 2019 in Internet – 28 commentsA new report (PDF) reveals that the vast majority of EU member state websites are laden with third-party cookies that are not disclosed to visitors.Cookiebot, a service to make websites GDPR and EPR compliant, scanned more than 180,000 EU government web pages over the course of two days to analyze cookie behavior on these sites. It discovered that only three government websites out of of 28 did not contain any third-party tracking cookies. All in all, it discovered 112 different ad tracking companies on EU public sector websites.Government sites in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain did not contain commercial cookies. France, Latvia, Belgium and Greece sites had more than 15 cookies each during scans, with France taking the crown with 52 different ad trackers found on government web pages. The findings come as a surprise for two main reasons. First, because one would expect that official government websites follow regulations in regards to cookie usage and tracking to the letter, especially since they expect public sites to do so. Second, because these sites don’t depend on advertising revenue as they are publicly funded.Cookiebot analyzed public health service sites in six member states in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, and Spain, as well and found a large number of ad trackers in most cases. The percentage of landing pages with ad trackers ranged from 73% in Ireland to 33% in Germany. BrainNet provides the first multi-person brain-to-brain interface which allows a nonthreatening direct collaboration between human brains. It can help small teams collaborate to solve a range of tasks using direct brain-to-brain communication. How does BrainNet operate? The noninvasive interface combines electroencephalography (EEG) to record brain signals and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to deliver the required information to the brain. For now, the interface allows three human subjects to collaborate, handle and solve a task using direct brain-to-brain communication. Two out of three human subjects are “Senders”. The senders’ brain signals are decoded using real-time EEG data analysis. This technique allows extracting decisions which are vital in communicating in order to solve the required challenges. Let’s take an example of a Tetris-like game–where you need quick decisions to decide whether to rotate a block or drop as it is in order to fill a line. The senders’ signals (decisions) are transmitted to the third subject human brain via the Internet, the “Receiver” in this case. The decisions are sent to the receiver brain via magnetic stimulation of the occipital cortex. The receiver can’t see the game screen to decide if the rotation of the block is required. The receiver integrates the decisions received and makes an informed call using an EEG interface regarding turning the position of the block or keeping it in the same position. The second round of the game allows the senders to validate the previous move and provide the necessary feedback to the receiver’s action. How did the results look? The group of researchers has implemented this technique for the Tetris game to evaluate the performance of BrainNet considering the following factors: Group-level performance during the game True/False positive rates of subject’s decisions Mutual information between subjects This was implemented among five groups of three human brain subjects to perform the Tetris task using BrainNet interface. The average accuracy result for the task was 0.813. Furthermore, they also tried varying the information reliability by injecting artificially generated noise into one of the senders’ signals. However, the receiver was able to classify which sender is more reliable based on the information transmitted to their brains. These positive results have open the gates and the possibilities of future brain-to-brain interfaces which holds the power of enabling cooperative problem solving by humans using a “social network” of connected brains. you take a picture of it. I can feel for and I understand what the family is going through, Prof. of Grand Forks, rose, all Jahai speakers tested agreed that the smell of cinnamon should be described as c?s pronounced "cheng-us" the same word they use for the smells of garlic onion coffee chocolate or coconut This suggests that Jahai are able to identify common odor properties in all of these foods suggesting a special perception ability compared with other cultures In contrast Majid says “English descriptions for odors were five times longer and nearly every participant came up with a completely different name There is little consensus on how to describe smells and people often give many conflicting and contradictory descriptions” What’s more she notes when English speakers described smells they often used the source of the smell in their description; a lemon for example smelled “lemony” The Jahai meanwhile had their own unique words for the smells The disparity may be due to importance of odors in the daily life of the Jahai says Douglas Medin a psychologist at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois and an expert in cognition and learning in indigenous cultures In a dense rainforest trunks can look the same for example so it is not always possible to identify a tree just by its looks says Medin who was not involved in the work In addition after a heavy rain smells become more evident and you can easily identify a pile of monkey scat decomposing leaves or flowers nearby if you learn to identify the smells Alternatively having an agreed-upon way to describe a smell that could attract a tiger might save your life It’s also possible that the Jahai are built differently than the rest of us The genes that code for the olfactory receptors in our noses exhibit a great deal of variation not only between different human populations but also between people So it may be that the Jahai have evolved more of these receptors or a greater diversity of them than everyone else much like the Tsimane tribe from the Bolivian rainforest were shown to be more sensitive to smells than were Germans “We won’t be able to answer these questions until comparable studies are carried out on lots of other human cultures” says Nicholas Evans a psychologist and biologist specializing on the diversity of linguistic structures at Australian National University in Canberra “But this Saturday With inputs from agencies In a major setback to the Congress party the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the petition filed by Congress leader KK Mishra related to the infamous dumper scam against Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as ‘withdrawn’ The apex court also observed orally that election should be fought outside the court and not in the courtroomFile photo of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan PTI “The Supreme Court today dismissed the petition filed by KK Mishra as withdrawn The Madhya Pradesh High Court on 29 January had dismissed the review petition on theground that sanction from competent authority wasn’t obtained by the petitioner as it was against the CM (Shivraj Singh Chouhan) who’s a public servant The HC had also observed that a similar complaint was discussed earlier and after three years the petitioner (KK Mishra) again brought it Therefore the SC today didn’t want to intervene with the HC order” advocate Vanshaja Shukla who appeared before the Supreme Court along with senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi told Firstpost Rohatgi and Shukla represented Chouhan on Thursday during the hearing before the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan “Justice Sikri observed orally to senior Congress leader and senior advocate Kapil Sibal that election is round the corner and they (Congress party) should fight election outside the court and not in the courtroom It was not recorded but was in response to senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi’s plea that the said case is politically motivated” said advocate Shukla The alleged dumper scam against Chouhan is one of the major issues like the Vyapam scam that the Opposition Congress has been using as a weapon to attack the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh alleging corruption The dumper scam Bhopal-based Congress leader and a lawyer by profession Mishra had alleged that Chouhan after becoming the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in November 2005 doled out favours to an industrial group — Jaypee Associates in Rewa He had moved court alleging that thechief minister misused his official position and rented out dumper trucks to the said group as quid pro quo for allocation of out-of-the-turn mining leases The complainant had also alleged that four dumpers worth Rs 2 crore were registered in the name of Chouhan’s wife Sadhna Singh An FIR was registered against Chouhan his wife an IAS officer and others in November 2007 regarding thepurchase of dumpers The Lokayukta had investigated the case and found that no offence was committed A closure report was filed by the Lokayukta police In January this year the Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed a review petition filed by Mishra challenging Bhopal district court’s judgment (28 October 2017) that had dismissed his previous petition seeking reinvestigation into the alleged dumper scam The ground of dismissal of review petition was the absence of sanction in the case A sanction is required from a competent authority for theprosecution against a person holding public office (or a public servant) In the case of the chief minister the competent authority is the governor The alleged dumper scam snowballed into a major controversy in the state and Assembly proceedings were disrupted for days when the issue became public Congress’ stand The Opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh that pursued the case for almost a decade is up in arms against Shivraj Singh government and wants to use it as a ‘major case of corruption’ during its upcoming Assembly election campaign Senior Congress leader and senior advocates Sibal Vivek Tankha and others represented Mishra at the Supreme Court “SC wasn’t inclined to hear the petition as the apex court sought a sanction from thecompetent authority in this case As the petition is against Madhya Pradesh chief minister a sanction is needed This only means more delay as they (Madhya Pradesh chief minister and others) have gained two months and by thentheAssembly election will take place But we’ll continue with our fight against this scam” senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member from Congress Tankha told Firstpost “I’m told that our senior leader Kapil Sibalji who’s also a senior advocate and representing this case along with Vivek Tankhaji and others withdrew the case on technical grounds It has not been rejected After discussion with our lawyers and leaders we may file a fresh petition afresh” said Mishra and doctors told her she was unlikely to ever walk again.
