Business and mines minister rally in support of gold-copper mine by The Canadian Press Posted Dec 10, 2013 4:47 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email VANCOUVER – Some of B.C.’s biggest business leaders are urging the federal government to approve a controversial gold and copper mine, despite environmental concerns and a judicial review. The individuals and groups, including the Vancouver Board of Trade, the Business Council of B.C. and provincial Mining Minister Bill Bennett, gathered in Vancouver Tuesday to vouch for the New Prosperity mine, 125 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake, B.C.The federal government will decide on the mine within months, while Taseko Mines Ltd. (TSX:TKO) has launched a judicial review alleging a federal panel used the wrong information to conclude the mine would result in adverse environmental effects.Chamber president John Winter says the province needs the mine, and the federal government must evaluate the project by considering the social and economic benefits that would be created for B.C.The project faces vehement opposition from members of local First Nations communities, who argue Fish Lake — considered sacred in their culture — would be damaged by the mine. This is Taseko’s second environmental review process for the $1.5 billion project, after the mining firm first proposed using the lake as a tailings pond. read more

The bitter placement experience of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) students has prompted IITs to look at providing a ‘safety net’ to their students, even as Flipkart has refused to budge from its position of deferring the joining date from June to December 2016 for the 18 students of IIM-A.The move also comes due to some startups slashing the salary package the employers had initially promised to the IIT recruits, according to a report in The Times of India. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will now allow all such affected students to re-register for placements. There are 16 IITs in India.Meanwhile, the fate of the 18 students remains uncertain with Flipkart insisting on deferring the date of joining, according to IIM-A. “They have communicated their decision to us and will be sending revised letters to our 18 students within a week,” the Business Standard quoted Asha Kaul, chairperson (placements), IIM-A, as saying.”It is a stalemate situation and there is no progression. They have a stand point and we have a stand point. It doesn’t make sense to continue with any further talks,” she added.IIM-A has sent the resumes of all the 18 students to other startups such as mobile wallet company Paytm that has agreed to consider them for placement. “We have received mails from the placement cell of IIM-A and we will look at hiring theses graduates, but only after interviews,” Amit Sinha, the Vice-President of Paytm, was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. But the joining bonus of Rs. 1.5 lakh offered by Flipkart could still lure some students.”They are offering a joining bonus at Rs 1.50 lakh. There could be some students who would want to wait while some would still want to join,” Kaul told Business Standard. The startup story has gone awry in India, with firms finding it difficult to manage their finances in view of investors cutting down on funding. Series A funding to startups declined 66 percent year-on-year to $112.43 million in the first quarter ended March 2016 marking a six-year low, the Business Standard said, referring to a report by VCCircle. To cut costs, startups have been shutting down shops, resulting in 3,000 jobs disappearing since last September, according to VCCircle. After attracting a record $20 billion in PE/VC funds in 2015 (VCCedge data), up from $12.5 billion in the previous year, Indian companies are already seeing a 50 percent drop in new funding, if the first quarter of 2016 is any indication. read more
(PhysOrg.com) — By analyzing data from experiments performed earlier this decade at the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA), physicists have made observations that seem to conflict with the widely accepted theory of the nucleus. © 2010 PhysOrg.com This document is subject to copyright. DOI:10.1103/PhysRevLett.105.072502 via: Nature News In 2002, Paul Koehler, a physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennesse, and others were measuring neutron resonances in four types of platinum isotopes. These resonance patterns – which are the energies at which the nucleus of a platinum isotope absorbs neutrons – are affected by the motion of the protons and neutrons inside the nucleus. These motions are thought to be chaotic, at least according to random matrix theory, which is used to determine the behavior of large nuclei. However, in a recent study, Koehler and his colleagues found that the protons and neutrons seem to move in a collective way that can’t be explained by any known model of nuclear structure.“The new results suggest that the roughly 200 nucleons inside the platinum nuclei studied act in unison to exhibit regular rather than chaotic properties,” according to a news article from ORNL’s website. “Given the relatively high energy and large number of nucleons involved, such collective behavior is totally unexpected and unexplained.” The researchers say that their results reject the random matrix theory for this data with a 99.997% probability. But to confirm their claim, the scientists need to perform further experiments on the nuclei of other elements besides platinum, which could verify that the discovery is not simply due to an unusual property of platinum nuclei. However, the problem is that ORELA has been closed due to budget cuts, and is not scheduled to reopen any time soon. The US Department of Energy has said that other research projects are a higher priority for the field of nuclear science. According to Koehler, there is one other place in the world where similar measurements could be made, which is the Geel Electron Linear Accelerator (GELINA) in Geel, Belgium. Here, the physicists could also repeat early experiments regarding random matrix theory performed in the 1970s at Columbia University, and see if the results hold up to modern instruments and analysis methods. As Koehler explained, resolving the issue could have implications for nuclear reactors. Scientists rely on random matrix theory to estimate the probability of escaping neutrons colliding with nuclei, and use these estimates to determine how much shielding is needed for nuclear reactors and stockpiles. Although some extra shielding is typically added, if more nuclear reactors are going to be built in the future, having an accurate estimate for shielding protection would be an important safety standard. Bipartite entanglement and partial measurements. Credit: (c) 2015 Nature 528, 77–83 (03 December 2015) doi:10.1038/nature15750 A way has been found to interconnect quantum devices including preserving entanglement Entanglement is, of course, a sometimes perplexing aspect of quantum mechanics where two separated particles share the same state—what happens to one, happens to the other, including changes made by simply measuring them. As strange as this aspect is, scientists have over the past several years come to better understand, measure and even cause it to come about on demand. But, as Rolston points out, the same cannot be said for systems where there are more than two particles involved, and that is where the researchers with this new effort focused their attention. To learn more, they came up with a way to measure entanglement entropy, which is a measure of the seeming randomness that comes about by simply observing just a portion of an entangled system. They used lasers to create an optical lattice that caused the creation of four individual compartments in one system where each compartment held just one atom. But they created the lattice in such a way as to allow for controlling the depth of the compartments, which when set low enough allowed particles to tunnel to other compartments and thus “feel” the presence of the other particles. The arrangement allowed for the creation of a many-body state. The team built two such four-compartment systems and first caused the atoms inside the systems to be identical to the atoms in the second system, and then compared just portions of each system—they note that differences they measured between different parts of the two systems when the whole remained identical could only occur if there were entanglement in the system. The experiments conducted by the team, Rolston notes, are the first of their kind and that means that while a lot has been shown, there is a lot more that can learned by tweaking and experimenting with the approach the group used. Journal information: Nature (Phys.org)—A team of researchers at Harvard University has developed a way to measure entanglement entropy in many-body systems. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the team describes the technique they used and why they believe their findings have set the stage for using entanglement to conduct future studies of many-body systems. Steven Rolston with the University of Maryland offers a News & Views piece on the research done by the team and explains why such work is important in understanding non-equilibrium systems. Explore further © 2015 Phys.org Citation: A way to study entanglement entropy between multi-body systems (2015, December 3) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2015-12-entanglement-entropy-multi-body.html More information: Rajibul Islam et al. Measuring entanglement entropy in a quantum many-body system, Nature (2015). DOI: 10.1038/nature15750AbstractEntanglement is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics. It describes non-local correlations between quantum objects, and is at the heart of quantum information sciences. Entanglement is now being studied in diverse fields ranging from condensed matter to quantum gravity. However, measuring entanglement remains a challenge. This is especially so in systems of interacting delocalized particles, for which a direct experimental measurement of spatial entanglement has been elusive. Here, we measure entanglement in such a system of itinerant particles using quantum interference of many-body twins. Making use of our single-site-resolved control of ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices, we prepare two identical copies of a many-body state and interfere them. This enables us to directly measure quantum purity, Rényi entanglement entropy, and mutual information. These experiments pave the way for using entanglement to characterize quantum phases and dynamics of strongly correlated many-body systems. This document is subject to copyright. From the print editionLIBERIA, Guanacaste – Construction began earlier this year on a new wing to the San Rafael Arcángel Clinic, located in the center of the provincial capital of Liberia. The addition includes 10 general patient rooms, three premium private rooms, two surgery theaters, an after-surgery recovery room, intensive care facilities and a cafeteria. The San Rafael Arcángel Clinic opened in 2006 and has grown to its current size in three phases. This third expansion will bring the facility from the status of a clinic to that of a hospital with 24-hour emergency care and surgery centers. There are 23 physicians in the clinic working in fields such as cardiology, nutrition, gynecology, physical therapy, plastic surgery and others. The clinic also includes a laboratory and pharmacy. As a medium-sized, private health care facility, San Rafael sees approximately 3,000 local and foreign patients a month. “The majority of our clients are from the region, and with this expansion we hope to see more patients from other countries traveling here for their medical needs,” said Ronald Guerrero, the clinic’s manager. “Projects like expanding this medical center are going to be what continues to pull Guanacaste up from the recent economic depression.”The new four-story tower on the clinic is scheduled to be completed in December at a cost of $3.1 million. For more, see: www.centromedicosanrafael.com. Charlie Hebdo is owned by a holding company, Les Editions Rotatives, that is controlled by staffers including Editor-in-Chief Philippe Val and cartoonist Jean Cabut. They helped re-found the magazine 11 years after a previous version, which ran from 1969 to 1981, ran out of money and shut down.© 2015, Bloomberg News Facebook Comments In recent weeks, the magazine has had two police officers stationed outside its doors because of terrorist threats, Rocco Contento of the SGP police union told BFM Television.Founded in its current incarnation in 1992, the magazine has skewered politicians, pop stars, and religious fundamentalists of all stripes in its weekly installments of caricatures, interviews, and opinionated essays. Targets of its cartoon covers have included former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn dancing in a red tutu and the late singer Michael Jackson as a skeleton shortly after his death from a drug overdose. Before Christmas last year, the cover depicted Charlie’s take on a traditional nativity scene — a spread-eagled Mary giving birth to the baby Jesus. That image currently decorates the magazine’s official Twitter profile. And the current cover is on “Submission,” a book released Wednesay about a future in which an Islamic France is led by a Muslim president who bans women from the workplace. Though little-known outside France, Charlie Hebdo — the name means simply Charlie Weekly — is one of the country’s better-selling political magazines, with an average circulation of about 100,000.In 2006, it printed cartoons of Muhammad originally published by a Danish newspaper, which had prompted sometimes- violent protests because Muslim tradition deems depictions of the prophet to be blasphemous. Islamic organizations sued the magazine for the drawings, a case dismissed by a French court in 2008, according to the Charlie Hebdo website.Politicians in France, which has Europe’s largest Muslim population, have long understood that the magazine might inflame cultural tensions. During the 2006 controversy, then-President Jacques Chirac asked media organizations to avoid “provocation” of Muslims. And in 2012 former Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called for restraint when Charlie Hebdo published more cartoons representing Muhammad. The same year, Agence France-Presse reported that police had interrogated a man who called for the beheading of Charlie Hebdo cartoonist Stephane Charbonnier, known as Charb. The magazine’s writers and owners have been unbowed, defending their content as free speech and arguing that they’ve satirized all major religions. In 2010, a cover showed Pope Benedict giving holy communion with a condom. A 2012 story on gay marriage depicted a ménage-a-trois featuring the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God. read more
